New Orleans Bicycles ...

was a project between a writer and a designer who, for the sake of the beauty of the bicycles featured in this book, also became photographers for a time. For two years, between the summers of 2004 and 2005, we walked and biked incessantly through the French Quarter searching for bicycles. It felt like brushing against something beautifully secretive, yet unbound and proud. It was an addictive passtime, and the experience enlightened us to more than just the broken down components of these functional machines. It was looking into the eyes of the buried present, the epitome of a city in all its ruined glory. New Orleans bicycles was an unstated code to live by, to create under, a means to discovering a way of life that is rare to come upon in this country, this time. We were lucky. Whether for the love of the bicycle, the beautiful decay, or the city's unique backdrop, I hope anyone who sees the photos can slso be affected somehow.
